Milton Eastman, who was arrested after he and two others broke into a Survival Supermarket outlet, is now a remanded prisoner after being arraigned on a charge of stealing over $6 million.
It is alleged that between January 27 and January 28, at Survival Supermarket, in Georgetown, Eastman, being together with others, stole 37 live rounds of .32 ammunition, a .32 magazine and $6M in cash, amounting to $6, 032,000, belonging to Parshuram Arjune, the owner of the supermarket.
Eastman, 58, of West Ruimveldt, was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 5.
Prosecutor Michael Grant objected to bail, citing the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence, the penalty it attracts and the amount of money and articles involved.
Grant said on the day in question, about 11:10pm, Arjune secured his business, which is monitored by a 24-hour surveillance camera and left for home. Afterward, a security guard on duty heard a strange sound coming from the building and he immediately contacted the owner.
However, Grant related that before Arjune arrived at the scene the security guard along with a few other persons went to the top floor of the supermarket, where the three burglars were seen, including the accused. The prosecutor said Eastman was the only one that they managed to apprehend as the two others escaped after several rounds were fired. He added that after conducting a search of Eastman, the police recovered $2 million.
The court heard that while in custody Eastman provided the police with the names of his accomplices and the police are currently searching for them.
After Grant asked for bail to be refused, the magistrate upheld the request and the case was adjourned until February 7, when it will be called at Court 1.
