Miner ‘played dead’ after shot and robbed by bandits

A miner who was shot three times about his body and then robbed on Friday night at McDoom by four gunmen, pretended to be dead, which may have saved his life.

Gladstone George, of Agricola, East Bank Demerara was shot in his back, shoulder and buttocks by four masked men around 9 pm at Middle Street, McDoom, who later escaped on foot.

Speaking to Stabroek News yesterday, George said he was at a friend’s house when the incident occurred. He said he was talking to a young woman in front of the yard when they heard a single gunshot ring out.

George said he crossed the road and saw four men dressed in black with hoods and masks walking toward him.

One man, he said, pointed a gun at him and as he began to retreat, he was shot in his buttocks. He fell face forward to the ground and the man shot him again in his back and shoulder while another began to pat him down.

George said he pretended to be dead until after the men had escaped with $100,000, jewellery and a cell phone. “I played a dead game on them and I could hear one of them saying ‘check he for the money…check he pants.’ But all the time I calling on God to help me,” George said.

After the bandits left, people came around and George was then taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted.

Police are investigating.
