Marlon Callender, the guard accused of the fatal shooting of fisherman Envil Pollard, was yesterday remanded to prison on a murder charge.
Callender, 25, was not required to plead to the charge, which stated on January 29, at McDoom, East Bank Demerara, he murdered Pollard.
No details about the crime were presented to the court other than those stated in the charge.
The matter was adjourned to February 10, when it will be called again before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Pollard, 45, also known as ‘Elvis,’ of 384 Crane Playfield, West Coast Demerara, was killed in what police described as a confrontation with the security guard.
In a statement, the police said the shooting occurred around 9.35 am on Friday after Pollard, who was in his boat under the wharf, was “confronted” by the armed security guard attached to Pritipaul Singh Investment Inc. He was shot to his chest. He was later taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Based on reports gathered by this newspaper, it appeared as though the security guard had an ongoing problem with Pollard, from whom he had been receiving payments in exchange for allowing the man to fish under the wharf.
