Dear Editor,
As Guyana struggles for a place where all citizens – women and men – can achieve their full potential it is clear that there are private sector interests which do not want this to happen. Stabroek News published a Stag beer advertisement in its Sunday, February 1, edition which proclaims that “it is a man’s world – rule it responsibly.”
Ansa McAl has had no shame in pursuing its aggressive alcohol campaigns in which men are dominating women and being a real man is often at the expense of any other kind of choice of not drinking alcohol or dominating women. The alcohol industry in Guyana it seems has no limits in terms of where and how it does its advertising and marketing, and stays far from the responsibility to prevent the destruction caused by the consumption of their advertising and their products.
Does Stabroek News, in furthering Ansa McAl’s misogynist philosophy, not believe that it is a world which belongs to men and women, and that all are responsible for how it is governed and ruled? Does Stabroek News not have a responsibility in rejecting advertising which contributes to the inequality that is responsible for gender based violence?
Yours faithfully,
Vidyaratha Kissoon
