Mark ‘The People’s Choice’ Austin 9 (1)-8 (3)-1 is determined to avenge his loss in the return clash with Dexter ‘The Cobra’ Gons
The two will meet at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on February 21 in a highly anticipated eight-round light welterweight rematch.
When the pair fought last September, a winded Austin who took the fight on short notice, was stopped in the eighth and final round.
In 18 days on the card dubbed ‘Caribbean Collision’, ‘The People’s Choice’ who believes his future is with boxing will be desperate to relaunch his career with an impressive win.
“If the knockout comes it comes but I’m going to win this fight convincingly “Austin told Stabroek Sport yesterday at the Andrew Lewis Gym.
“The last time I did not have enough time to train and wasn’t prepared but I remain the people’s choice and everybody knows that was a late notice fight so I’m coming back to give my fans the revenge that they want.”
Austin’s coach, George ‘Canchie’ Oprecht was more blunt in his bold predictions for fight night.
“We will give Gonsalves a boxing lesson, we know his weaknesses, we will cut him in half, he’s a big tall lanky guy, we gonna bring him down and then take him out.
Oprecth added, “Mark is a better fighter, he is of a higher calibre, I am confident as long as his conditioning is right we will take out Gonsalves.”
Austin and Gonsalves are the main attraction on the undercard on a night headed by the light welterweight title fight between Jamaican, Sakima Mullings (WBC CABOFE welterweight champ) and former world rater and multiple division champion, Clive ‘The Punisher’ Atwell.
In another rematch, CABOFE middleweight champion Edmond DeClou will square off against national super middleweight title holder, Derrick Richmond in an eight-round middleweight contest. DeClou has not been in the ring since October, 2013 after his career was shelved due to a broken jaw compliments of a left hand from Richmond.
Debutant, Keeve Allicock will lace it up against undefeated prospect, Quincy Gomes in a lightweight fight scheduled for six rounds.
The season premier also features debutants Travis Fraser and Charwyn Estwick matching gloves in a four-round light middleweight contest.
According to an executive of the GBBC, “the card will become official with the contract signing either on Thursday or Friday.”
Tickets cost $3000 for ringside and half that amount for regular seating.
