The upsets continued in the 21st edition of the Mayor’s Cup knockout football tourney as Santos FC and Sunburst Camptown fell victims to unlikely opponents on Sunday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground in Bourda.
Santos went down to Mahaica by a 2-1 score line in the curtailed opening 70 minute affair while East Coast of Demerara outfit Ann’s Grove FC dismissed Campbellville giants Sunburst Camptown by a 3-0 margin.
In the earlier exchanges during the curtain raiser, Mahaica almost took the early lead in the 17th minute as a right-footed strike from Holder within the centre of the box was denied by custodian Dervin Bennette.
Quincy Holder should have broken the deadlock eight minutes later after being in a one-on-one situation with Bennette within the right side of the box, only to lash his effort wide of the left upright.
Mahaica’s lack of clinical display in the final third would come back to haunt them as Santos stole the early lead in the 32nd minute through Jobe Caesar, whose right footed strike from the top of the box, took a deflection off the body of a defender and settled into the right corner.
However, their lead would not last long as Holder leveled proceedings in the 44th minute, burying his strike down the centre of the goal following a one-on-one situation, after outsprinting the Centre half pairing to latch onto a through pass.
Veteran forward Delroy Dean would then spurn a great opportunity for Mahaica to take the lead in the 57th minute, flicking his effort narrowly wide of the lower left corner with only the keeper in his path.
Nonetheless the lanky hitman would make up for his earlier miss, burying his effort down the middle of the net from within the centre of the box, after stealing the ball from a defender outside the area.
In the second fixture, Ann’s Grove downed Sunburst Camptown by a 3-0 score line. Maxston Adams gave Ann Grove the early lead as he netted through a sixth minute conversion. Quincy Johnson would then double their lead in the second period through a 76th minute conversion.
The win would then be sealed as Kelvin Barry etched his name on the scorer’s sheet compliments of an 89th minute attempt.
