The super talented Miguel Wong along with Kristie Lopes and Shemar Britton were the winners of their respective categories when the
Guyana Table Tennis Association staged its Cadet (15 years and under) and Junior (18 years and under) assessment tournament Sunday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Miguel dominated the boys’ 15 years and under competition defeating Nicholas Romain in the final 11-6, 11-6, 11-7 (3-0).
Khalil Ninvalle and Yog Mahadeo Jr. were joint third place finishers.
In the semifinals Wong defeated Ninvalle 11-4, 11-6, 11-2 (3-0) and Romain defeated Mahadeo 11-7, 11-4, 11-8 (3-0)
Earlier, in the quarter finals Wong defeated Vincente Henery 3-0, Kaysan Ninvalle lost to Khalil Ninvalle (1-3), Romain defeated Terrence Rausch (3-1) and Mahadeo defeated Jeremey Singh (3-1).
In the girls’ 15 years and under round robin play off, Lopes defeated Aneka Phillips, Simran Bissu and Brittney Bunbury to take the top spot.
Phillips, was second, Bissu, third and Bunbury fourth.
National men’s player Shemar Britton continued to rule the roost in the 18 years category.
Competing in the round robin playoff Britton defeated Kyle Edghill, Alec Hopkinson and Elishaba Johnson, Edghill finished second, Hopkinson third and Johnson, who forfeited his match against Hopkinson because of injury, placed fourth.
According to a press release from the GTTA, the tournament attracted over 30 players from around the country.
Prior to the commencement of the competition, GTTA President Godfrey Munroe told the players that the tournament was being used as the benchmark for selection to national squads especially for the upcoming Caribbean Cadet and Junior championships later this year.
Munroe also informed that planned activities for 2015 will proceed as scheduled including the annual National Sports Commission Mashramani and the Business School tournaments and the National Champion-ships
Meanwhile on Sunday, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall from 2pm, the GTTA will be instituting fitness drills for national and future national table tennis players as part of the GTTA selection criteria.
