A founding member of the Alliance For Change’s New York/New Jersey chapter, Sankar Nirahu died in his sleep in New York on January 31st.
The party, in a statement issued on Monday, said that the AFC is in a state of deep mourning at the passing of one of its “foremost warriors” for change and equal rights for all Guyanese.
“Nirahu was a fearless champion and fighter for a new and better Guyana, a Guyana that provides equal rights and justice to all Guyanese,” the statement read, adding that the party expressed its heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives and friends.
The statement said Party Leader Khemraj Ramjattan was in a state of deep shock. “This is a massively hurtful blow to the party. Sankar was leading the work for the AFC in North America and his loss will be felt by the party.
His untimely passing will make our work in this campaign so much harder as he would have contributed so much,” the statement quoted Ramjattan as saying.
“He will want us to band together and carry on the fight and while we are in mourning, we will do so. In the 2011 campaign we lost our founder sister Sheila Holder, now in 2015 we have lost Sankar. We must continue the campaign for change, for a better Guyana in their names and in the interest of all Guyanese,” Ramjattan said.
An evening of reflection on Nirahu’s life will be held on February 6 from 5pm to 9pm at 11102 Atlantic Avenue, South Richmond Hill, Queens, New York 11419. His body will be cremated on February 7.
