Will the upsets continue in the 21st edition of the Mayors Cup knockout football tourney or will order be restored when the event continues today at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground in Bourda with a doubleheader.
The event which commenced on Friday January 30th has seen several high profile sides making early exits. The majors clubs eliminated from the tourney to date are Sunburst Camptown, Victoria Kings, Santos FC and Grove Hi-Tech.
In the feature contest of the night, resurgent home side GFC led by the likes of Keiron Solomon, Kareem Knights, Dellon Cadogan and Sherman Anthony will faceoff with West Demerara unit Uitvlugt Warriors and their trident of Seon Bobb, Owen McGarrell and Colin Benjamin.
GFC coach Vurlon Mills during an invited comment said “We are ready for the game, we should be one of the fitter sides in the tournament because we have been training regularly. I think we are a much better side this time around than in the yearend tournament”.
Mills further said “The chemistry and discipline amongst the players is much better. We have players who understand the game a little more now so I think we should give a good account of ourselves in the game today”.
“If we stick to our game plan and tactics, we should come away with the victory. I think they (Uitvlugt) are a physical team. I think they are going to be fit for the first half so if we can hold for the first 45 minutes, the second half will be much easier” he added.
The opening matchup of the night will witness East Coast of Demerara side Haslington FC will opposing the Guyana Police Force (GPF) from 19:00hrs.
Winners of the event will receive $1,000,000 and the championship trophy while the runners-up will pocket $300,000 and the respective title. The third and fourth positioned teams will walk away with $200,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
