The Ministry of Local Government has said that more than 232 truckloads of waste was removed from Linden when it launched the ‘Clean up my country’ programme in the township last month-end.
In a press release, the ministry said the programme started on Wednesday January 28 and has been extended to Friday February 6 to facilitate the removal of illegal garbage piles in parts of Amelia’s Ward and its environs. The programme was implemented in the Region Ten community despite a Resolution passed by the Linden Town Council for it to cease one day after it was initiated there.
“The Bulk Waste Removal Team fulfilled its objectives of removing bulk waste from residents free of cost and clearing of numerous roadside garbage piles and illegal dumpsites,” the press release said. Under the programme, 26 persons from various communities within the municipality were recruited as Community Enhancement Workers alongside four truck drivers to execute the Community Clean-Up Programme with the aim of improving the sanitation and aesthetics of the township.
The ministry said residents were thankful for the programme as it has allowed them to get rid of bulk waste stored on their premises. Further, several of them have expressed disappointment at the council for not adequately addressing the garbage crises in the town.
