Satwattie Leelawattie, 53, of Leonora, West Coast Demerara was elated because she would finally be able to acquire a house lot to own her own home.
She has been living in a rented house for several years now and always dreamt that one day her life would improve. Her dreams are one step closer to becoming a reality.
The woman was among 264 persons who received their lots when the Ministry of Housing held a One-Stop-Shop at Uitvlugt on Wednesday.
The middle income lots cost $700,000 and are located at Zeeburg and De Willem where two new schemes are currently being developed.
President Donald Ramotar and Minister of Housing, Irfaan Ali had addressed the recipients at a simple ceremony before the commencement of the exercise. A young father of three, Make Ramlall, 30, of Parika was also extremely happy as he looked at the document in his hand that he had obtained.
“I must feel happy,” he told Stabroek News, smiling. “I applied since 2011 for this and I’m happy to finally get it.”
Ramlall, a supervisor on a fuel boat said he is currently renting a one-bedroom house and it is very inconvenient for his family. “My children are getting big and I have to make them comfortable. As soon as they show me the land I would start building.”
Seenanan Khandai, 23, of Cornelia Ida is very excited to become a home owner at a young age and said “it feels good to have my first asset. I applied a long time ago.”
He could not believe that the process was so smooth and simple and told this newspaper “I expected it to be more of a hassle… The staff was very good and helpful; I got through in a timely manner.”
