West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul is among nine Guyanese selected to represent the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the 2015 CPL T20 tournament planned later this year, at the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Players’ Draft yesterday in Kingston, Jamaica.
The 40-year-old left handed batsman was bagged by the Warriors’ selection panel which included newly appointed coach Carl Hooper, in the eleventh round at a cost of US$10,000.
This is the second time that Chanderpaul has been bought by a franchise; the first being at the inaugural draft where he was chosen by the St Lucia Zouks though he withdrew due to a contractual agreement with English County Club Derbyshire.
A veteran of 161 Test matches and 268 One Day Internationals (ODIs), Chanderpaul will be a member of a very experienced Warriors’ team that includes Sri Lankan internationals Lasith Malinga, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Thisara Perera; Australia’s Brad Hodge, and several West Indies players including Sunil Narine and Lendl Simmons and others.
The eight other Guyanese selected at the auction are Christopher Barnwell, Assad Fudadin, Trevon Griffith, Paul Wintz, Ronsford Beaton, Devendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul who will represent the Warriors while Narsingh Deonarine will play for former champions, the Jamaica Tallawahs.
Meanwhile, exhilarating Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi is expected to make his CPL debut after new franchise St Kitts and Nevis grabbed him in the first round for US$150,000. Former South African player, Jacques Kallis was snapped up by the T&T Red Steel in the second round at a price of US$100,000. Former Antigua Hawksbill skipper Marlon Samuels will represent SKN while Kevin Pietersen will continue with the Zouks alongside Darren Sammy.
