Good things are on the horizon for the disciplines of Track and Field and Swimming.
This is according to Minister of Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony.
During an interview with media operatives yesterday, Dr. Anthony disclosed that the Synthetic Track and Field facility at Leonora and the warm up pool at the National Aquatic Centre, Liliendaal will both become operational in the not too distant future.
Synthetic track
Speaking on the Synthetic track, Dr. Anthony pointed out that “Very shortly we are hoping to open, we were getting GPL to put in power into the facility and there are some finishing touches going on as it regards to the club house.
Once the club house is completed we will be in a position to open the facility.”
When quizzed on whether March would be the deadline, Anthony added that “We still have that in our sights, we have Moscow lighting installing the lighting towers so a lot of the finishing touches right now are ongoing.” The track has experienced several delays and other problems.
Warm up pool
So when will the warm up pool become operational?
“Once the deck is completed, we will open it, I would say we still have a few days more work.
Dr. Anthony divulged that the biggest bug bear on finishing the deck has been the inconsistency of the contractors.
“Our biggest trouble there has been the inconsistency of the contractors, sometimes they come sometimes they don’t come and that is what has delayed us but the pool itself has been functional, its operational but we don’t want people to go there without the deck being completed.
The minster went on to state that “It’s not major works but they just need to finish it off and as soon as we complete that we will open it.”
