Jamal Bacchus, the man accused of the fatal stabbing of minibus driver Dhanshana Ram after an argument, was remanded to prison yesterday after being arraigned on a murder charge.
It is alleged that on February 4, at Timehri, East Bank Demerara, Bacchus murdered Ram, 43, of Friendship, East Bank Demerara.
Bacchus was not required to plead to the charge, which was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
No details were presented to the court other than those mentioned in the charge.
However, a police statement on the murder had stated that about 1:15 AM on Wednesday, Ram sustained stab wounds about his body during an argument with another man at Timehri. The injured Ram was subsequently rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries.
Bacchus was represented by attorney Nigel Hughes, who indicated that his client was beaten to his head by the police. Bacchus showed the court marks on his scalp.
The matter was adjourned to February 26.
