The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Slingerz FC will make their first appearance in the Mayor’s Cup knockout football tourney today when they tackle giant-killers Ann’s Grove and Mahaica respectively at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.
In the feature contest at 21:00hrs, the GDF unit led by the likes of Delwyn Fraser, Eusi Phillips, Delroy Fraser and recent acquisitions Trevon Lythcott, Eon Alleyne and Oswald Cornette will attempt to avoid the fate of Sunburst Camptown when they tackle Ann’s Grove.
The East Coast of Demerara side in their earlier matchup, humbled the Campbellville giants 3-0. They will once again look to their trio of Maxston Adams, Quincy Johnson and Kelvin Barry to lead their efforts as they aim to fashion another upset.
The opening matchup of the night at 19:00hrs will witness losing finalist Slingerz FC battling Mahaica Determinators.
Confident following their 2-1 win over Santos in the earlier round, Mahaica will look to add another high profile side to their list of victims and will look to their combination of Quincy Holder and Delroy Dean to fire them to the next round.
However the Vergenoegen giants will be a different proposition all together. Reinforced following the acquisition of Solomon Austin and Dwayne Lawrence, Slingerz will look to their star-studded roster of Vurlon Mills, Devon Millington, Anthony Abrams and Tichard Joseph to pilot them to victory.
Winners of the event will receive $1,000,000 and the championship trophy while the runners-up will pocket $300,000 and the respective title. The third and fourth positioned teams will walk away with $200,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
