An elderly greens vendor lost his life yesterday morning when he crashed into a parked truck along the Number 56 Village, Corentyne Public Road.
The deceased has been identified as Mohid Wahab, 65, who was a resident of Number 72 Village, Corentyne. Turaj Hemchand 17, of Number 76 Village, who worked with Wahab, was also injured in the accident.
Stabroek News was told Wahab was on his way home from the Port Mourant market at the time of the accident, which occurred at around 8:10 AM.
An investigator stated that it seemed as if Wahab, who was driving a lorry, GFF 6286, fell asleep and crashed into the rear of another lorry, GMM3455, which was parked along the road.
A source told Stabroek News that after the crash, residents rushed out to offer assistance to Wahab, who was pinned inside of the vehicle.
After residents managed to free Wahab and Hemchand, they were both rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital. Wahab was pronounced dead on arrival, while Hemchand was admitted for treatment.
Stabroek News understands that Wahab and his worker left home on Friday evening around 9:30 PM and travelled to the Port Mourant market to sell produce.
Both he and Hemchand spent the entire night at the market selling their produce.
It is a custom for vendors who sell at the Port Mourant Market to arrive on Friday night and sell throughout the night into the next morning.
The market is the largest in Berbice on Saturdays and would usually draw vendors, especially farmers, from all parts of the county.
