BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich struck his second first class hundred to put Barbados Pride in command against Leeward Islands Hurricanes, while leaders Guyana Jaguars took a handy lead over Jamaica Franchise on the second day of the fifth round of matches in the WICB Professional Cricket League here yesterday.
The right-handed Dowrich finished unbeaten on 131 as Barbados Pride declared their first innings on 406 for six at Kensington Oval.
Seamers Carlos Brathwaite and Tino Best then grabbed two wickets apiece as the Hurricanes stumbled to 84 for five at the close, still trailing by 322 runs heading into today’s third day.
Brathwaite, just back from the West Indies tour of South Africa, claimed two for eight and Best, two for 16, to leave Hurricanes on 50 for five at one stage late in the evening.
However, wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton struck an unbeaten 30 off just 38 balls, adding an important 34 for the sixth wicket with Akeem Saunders, 12 not out, to prop up the innings.
Dowrich, meanwhile, was the star of the day, receiving great support from Carlos Brathwaite who hammered a robust 60 and Ashley Nurse who hit 34 not out.
Resuming the day on 27 with Barbados on 182 for four, the 23-year-old Dowrich faced 236 balls, in 323 minutes and counted 22 fours and a six, posting a handsome 141 for the sixth wicket with Brathwaite, whose knock came from 93 balls and included four fours and two sixes.
Dowrich also added a further 63 with Nurse in an unbroken seventh wicket stand.
At Sabina Park in Kingston, Guyana took a 137-run lead over the hosts but then lost a flurry of wickets to end the day precariously perched on 54 for four.
Resuming the day on 298 for eight, Guyana were bowled out for 314 with Veerasammy Permaul converting his overnight 75 into 86 not out.
Fast bowler Jason Dawes (3-28) and Odean Brown (3-70) both finished with three wickets apiece.
Permaul then continued his destruction with the ball, claiming four for 22 with his left-arm spin as Jamaica crumbled to 177 all out.
Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo (2-30) and fast bowler Keon Joseph (2-44) chimed in with two wickets apiece.
Jermaine Blackwood and Horace Miller both top scored with 44, with Blackwood putting on 50 for the second wicket with John Campbell who got 15.
Well positioned on 102 for three, Jamaica lost their last seven wickets for 75 runs to collapse badly.
However, pacer Marquino Mindley then got in among the Guyana top order, to leave the visitors struggling and only 191 runs ahead overall.
At the Beausejour Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, rain scuppered Windward Islands Volcanoes attempt to take control against Trinidad and Tobago Red Force.
When the weather forced a premature close to the day, Red Force were under pressure at 129 for five in reply to the Windwards’ massive 400 for eight declared.
Left-arm seamer Kenroy Peters was the main destroyer with three for 14 from 13 overs.
Yannick Cariah was leading the fight for Red Force with an unbeaten 40 from two hours at the crease, with seven fours.
