It will be Georgetown versus Berbice when Fruta Conquerors and Pele FC faceoff with New Amsterdam United and Cougars FC respectively in the Mayor’s Cup knockout football tourney today at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground in Bourda.
In the feature contest, Tucville heavyweights Fruta Conquerors will lock horns with familiar foes New Amsterdam United at 21:00hrs.
Presently going through a transitional period, Fruta Conquerors will attempt to get back to winning ways and will look to their senior core of Delon Williams, Rafael Edwards, Jermaine Junior and Lennox Charles to guide their talented but youthful side into the next round.
However, New Amsterdam will be in a confident mood following their win over arch-rival Monedderlust in their earlier engagement and will require another dogged showing led by Captain Adrian Adams, if they are to be successful when opening whistle sounds.
Fruta Conquerors coach Calvin Allen in an invited comment said “In terms of preparing what we have, preparation has been going along fine. The transfer window caused a delay in preparation for most clubs including ours. Otherwise than that, preparation has been coming along fine”.
According to Allen “The younger players are eager to go and step up to the challenge and the senior players have been working along with them nicely. All in all, preparation has been good. Like always we will go out there with the mentality to come out as victors, we prepared to win and expect nothing less”.
He added “I am not disrespecting or looking past our opponents, we know the NA United team is tough unit and have a fairly good understanding of how they play so we are preparing to handle the challenge the throw at us and prepare to counter it meaningfully”.
The opening fixture of the night will witness Pele tackling Cougars from 19:00hrs. Marshalled by the quartet of Shemroy Arthur, Okeene Fraser, Omallo Williams and Keoma Gravesande, Pele will look to maintain their reputation as knockout specialists as they target a berth in the next round.
Conversely, the Berbicians will hope to extend their stay in the tourney and will hope the quartet of Alvin Reynolds, Cleroy Joseph, Collis Burnette and Sherwin Parris can provide another clinical showing come kick off time.
Winners of the event will receive $1,000,000 and the championship trophy while the runners-up will pocket $300,000 and the respective title. The third and fourth positioned teams will walk away with $200,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
