Georgetown and East Coast recorded comfortable victories in their Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) inter association opening encounters yesterday.
At the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground, home-boy Alphius Bookie’s half century guided Georgetown to a six-wicket win over East Bank while an all-round performance by Amin Gangadeen led East Coast past West Demerara.
Bookie scored 83 not out to propel Georgetown to their target of 156-4 in just 28.1 overs, replying to the 155-7 that was made by East Bank.
The 14 year old national under-15 batsman partnered with his fellow club mate Ashmead Nedd (23) to share a 133 run third wicket stand which was the back bone of their team run chase.
He accounted for eight fours and two sixes during his team’s innings. Mixed with elegance and determination, Bookie batted until victory was achieved.
Jeremiah Scott and Aditya Shivraj picked up two wickets each for East Bank. Earlier Jeremiah and Daniel Scott were instrumental in East Bank’s total.
The pair added 79 for the seventh wicket after their team was struggling at 65-6 at one stage. Jeremiah made 51 with five fours and two sixes while Daniel got 18. Shivraj chipped in with 17.
Left arm spinner Nedd bagged 3-29 while petite off spinner Joel Spooner also grabbed three wickets.
At the Enterprise ground, East Coast got past West Demerara in a low scoring match where 115 extras were bowled out of 241 runs.
West Demerara batted first and was dismissed for 120 in 46.1 overs, with extras contributing 70 while Sachin Basdeo scored 23. Amin Gangadeen claimed 4-17 for East Coast, who responded with 121-5 in 37.2 overs.
Gangadeen returned with the bat to top score with 43. East Coast’s innings was also aided by 45 extras. P. Goomtipersaud picked up 3-19 for West Demerara.
The tournament continues on Tuesday at DCC and Everest.
