Williams winning ways continues

Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams was the freshest and the fastest as he beat a visibly fatigued Alanzo Greaves and Hamza Eastman to take his first road race win of the season in a four-man sprint yesterday at West Demerara.

The 24th edition of the R&R International 40-mile event pedaled off in cool conditions but proceedings heated up quickly.

The event, which pedaled off at the Demerara Harbour Bridge, proceeded to Bushy Park and returned to the point of origin was action-packed from the start to the finish.

Yesterday’s race contained a series of attacks by several sets of riders on the upward journey but these cyclists were quickly wheeled in by the peloton.

The trend continued on the downward journey until Williams of Team Evolution, orchestrated a break away with Team Coco’s Eastman which Greaves (Roraima Bikers) and Raul Leal (Flying Stars) followed at Uitvlugt.

With Greaves doing the bulk of the pacing, the group was able to stretch their lead on the peloton which was trying to bridge the gap.

The foursome continued to work in tandem until the finish line approaching. Expectedly, teamwork was dropped like a bad habit.

During the final 400m Eastman rolled up the sprint which caused a domino effect as Williams, Greaves and fourth place finisher Leal all rose from their saddles.

In the end, Williams was the freshest and he beat Greaves who was cramping and Eastman to take his first road win of 2015 in one hour and 38 minutes and 59 seconds.

Williams also won the season opener in the National Park.

Notes: The fourth event of the season attracted 51 starters. It was Greaves’ third second place finish of the year. The consistent 25-year old placed fourth in his other start. (Emmerson Campbell)
