Two men, jointly charged with possession of cannabis, were yesterday remanded to prison after a court was told that they claimed the drug and asked police to give them a chance.
Logger Kenneth Thomas, 37, and miner Hilary Harding, 29, denied the charge which stated that on February 8, at Coomacka Mines, Linden, they had in their possession 615 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Prosecutor Michael Grant told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that police, acting on information received, went to Harding’s home, where Thomas was also present, to search. The search uncovered a black plastic bag with the drug. Grant said Harding told the police, “Officer is me weed,” while Thomas reportedly said, “Is a fine thing, give we a chance.”
Grant asked the court to refuse bail due to the fact that both the defendants knew the narcotics were in the house.
The duo’s attorney asked for bail to be granted in a reasonable sum but the request was denied and the matter was adjourned until tomorrow, when it will be called at the Linden Magistrate’s Court.
