Two men and a young teenager were yesterday refused bail after being charged over an illegal M15 rifle that was found in a car on Wednesday night.
The charge was read to the father and son duo of Rajendra and Steve Deen as well as the teen boy when they were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The proceedings were held in-camera due to the fact that the teen was a juvenile.
Stabroek News was told that Prosecutor Michael Grant objected to bail and bail was refused.
The matter is to be called again on Monday before Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Crime Chief Leslie James had told Stabroek News that the father turned himself into police and he claimed ownership of the weapon after six persons were arrested in connection with the find.
A police statement had said that at around 10:40 PM on Wednesday, ranks of a mobile police patrol conducted a search on a car at Sussex Street, Georgetown, during which the M15 rifle along with thirty .223 rounds were found.
James, following inquiries from this newspaper, said the car was parked on the roadway when ranks conducted the search. It would appear that the ranks were acting on information provided to them.
Stabroek News was told that the weapon was acquired to be used for security purposes in the interior.
