Justicia carnea commonly called Jacobinea or Flamingo Plant originated in Brazil and there are approximarely 300 species in the Justicia genus.
This beautiful tropical perennial was named for James Justice, a Scottish horticulturist in the 17th Century.
Justicia carnea is a shrubby upright plant with soft green leaves. Unless properly pruned it can become scraggly. Pruning will also encourage plants to bush out. The main attraction is the appealing pink tubular flowers they produce. The flowers grow in clusters and in a variety of colours: pink, white, yellow and red. They have adapted well in Florida and the Caribbean.
Plant Justicia carnea in well-drained soil, under semi-shade. Fertilize with Miracle Gro All Purpose Plant Food once every two weeks. It can be grown from cuttings.
Until next week, happy gardening.
