Ralph Smith, who was involved in an accident while travelling to Lethem four days ago is still a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where his condition is listed as critical.
Speaking to Stabroek News yesterday, a relative of the injured man, Joyce Lawrence, said that she visited him late yesterday afternoon and he is still in a critical condition.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, Smith and the now dead, Roy Sam, Community Support Officer (CSO) of Aishalton were among a group of nine men including toshaos and councillors travelling from Aishalton to Lethem on Thursday in order to attend a meeting when they were involved in the accident.
This newspaper understands that Sam, a father of three, was travelling in the tray of the pick-up with about three other men.
He was flung from the vehicle as it toppled several times and died on the spot while Smith was knocked unconscious. He was air-dashed to Lethem from Mountain Point before being air-dashed to Georgetown.
Smith’s daughter, Rema Smith had said her father had sustained severe head injuries and blood was coming out of one of his ears.
She further stated that he was on a life support machine and was hooked up to an oxygen machine because he could not breathe on his own.
