A La Belle Alliance, Essequibo Coast resident is now a remanded prisoner after being charged with two counts of rape.
At the Charity Magistrate’s Court, Magistrate Sunil Scarce heard that on February 10th, 2015, at Bushlot, Astil Paul went into the home of a 61-year-old woman and raped her for one hour.
According to the police, Paul tried to rape the woman asecond time but failed to penetrate.
A report was made to the police after the attack and Paul was arrested and charged.
In a statement given to the police, Paul allegedly also confessed to raping a 50-year-old woman on May 10th, 2014. He allegedly entered the woman’s house, removed her clothes, raped her then fled.
Paul, who was represented by attorney Valensia Yannason, was not required to plead to the charges and his attorney asked the court for reasonable bail to be granted to him, saying he is not a flight risk.
Prosecutor Haimwant Ramsewak, however, objected to bail and cited the seriousness and prevalence of the offence.
Magistrate Scarce eventually remanded Paul to prison until March 24.
