The Guyana Elections Commission held a swearing-in ceremony yesterday for the 10 district returning officers for the upcoming May 11, General and Regional Elections.
Murphy De Souza for District 1, Rabinauth Boodram for District 2, Kushaldeo Bipath for District 3, Melanie Marshall for District 4, Clairmont Mingo for District 5, Alfa Mohamed for District 6, Glendon Fredricks for District 7, Dwayne Marco for District 8, Carlos Melville for District 9 and Lorna Marks for District 10 took the oath at GECOM’s Command Centre in Kingston, Georgetown.
The returning officers have a variety of functions pertaining to the elections and will transmit the official results to GECOM for each of their regions following polling.
Chief Election Officer (CEO) Keith Lowenfield said swearing-in the returning officers was in keeping with moving the commission’s work along as the nation gears up for elections.
He said that the returning officers will be charged with upholding the integrity of the commission in their work.
GECOM’s Chairman, Dr Steve Surujbally echoed the sentiments of the CEO while noting that transparent and professional conduct and processes will provide a situation where the commission’s work could not be faulted later on.
