A Tuschen woman is now a remanded prisoner after she appeared in court yesterday charged with possession of narcotics.
Beverly Chase denied the charge that she had 18 grammes of cannabis in her possession at Cuyuni River, on February 23. Chase’s attorney, Mark Conway, told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts that his client is a single parent and cares for three minor children. He pleaded for the court to be lenient and consider bail for her.
In addition, the attorney said the narcotics were found on a table outside of a shop that Chase operates. He said she was behind a counter and had just relieved the person who worked the previous shift when the discovery was made. Conway said these constituted special reasons for bail to be granted.
However, Prosecutor Michael Grant objected to bail and noted that the police’s case differed from the attorney’s account. Grant said that the police received information which led them to the shop and the cannabis was found on a table behind Chase, inside of the shop, concealed in a plastic bag.
The prosecution’s objection was upheld and Chase was remanded to prison until March 5, when she will appear at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
