Dexter Rosemay, accused of wounding another man in Lethem, was on Tuesday released on $75,000 bail after claiming self defence.
It is alleged that on February 20th, at Lethem, Rosemay of Agricola, East Bank Demerara, unlawfully wounded John Stephen with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause him actual bodily harm.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge, which was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magis-trates’ Court 1.
“My worship these boys, two of them, they did drinking and one of them just start jook me up with a bottle.
After that, I tek a chair and defend myself and lash he up,” Rosemay told the court. Police say that at about 3:30AM, Rosemay and two other men had an argument, after which one of them attacked him with a bottle and they made good their escape.
Sometime after, Rosemay approached one of the men and enquired about the whereabouts of the person that injured him but got no information.
He was subsequently arrested and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was treated before he was taken into custody.
The court was also told that the person that allegedly wounded Rosemay was arrested on Monday and he is expected to appear in court.Prosecutor Michael Grant had no objections to bail, which was initially set at $100,000.
The accused pleaded with the court for a reduction, saying he could not afford such a large sum. Bail was then reduced to $75,000.
The condition of the bail is that he report to the detective in charge of ‘F’ Division, at Eve Leary, every fortnight.
The matter is adjourned to March 4.
