Raphael deGroot and Benjamin Mekdeci were amongst the winners when the Guyana Squash Association in collaboration with its number one corporate sponsor Digicel commenced its 2015 season with the Bounty Farm Limited handicap squash tournament.
Played at the Georgetown Club squash courts on Camp Street, De Groot (-13) overcame Medhi Ramdhani (+5) in straight sets by a 15 – 11, 15 – 12 margin whilst Mekdeci (-11) on the other hand, dismissed David Fernandes (+8) also in straight sets 16 – 14, 15 – 12.
Similarly registering wins were Ashley de Groot (+1) who downed Alex Cheeks (+7) by a 15 – 8, 15 – 9 margin and Joe Mekdeci (0) who overcame the always competitive Taylor Fernandes (+6) by a 13 – 15, 15 – 12, 15 – 9 score line.
Also beginning their campaign on winning notes were Ingram Edwards (+4) who edged Stephen Fernandes (+7) 15 – 12, 8 – 15, 15 – 11 and Daniel Islam (+7) defeated Robert Hiscock (+8) by a 16 – 14, 15 – 5 score.
In other results, John Maikoo (+7) defeated Timothy Jonas (+10) 15 – 11, 10 – 15, 15 – 9 while Dwayne Jan (+9) defeated Andrea King (+8) 8 – 15, 15 – 13, 15 – 13 and Shane Seebarran (+11) edged Jonathan Fernandes (+9) 15 – 11, 15 – 11.
Anthony Islam (+9) then defeated Haopei Yang (+10) 15 – 13, 15 – 9 while Sarah Lewis (+11) defeated Robin Low (+10) 18 – 16, 8 – 15, 15 – 10 and Kyle Waldron (+10) needled Jonathan Edwards (+12) 15 – 10, 15 – 8. Action in the tourney is scheduled to continue at the same venue today.
