Two porters were jailed yesterday after admitting to stealing five bags of rice from a city market. The court heard that between February 22nd and February 23rd, Ramraj Angus, 28, and Michael Gaynor, 33, stole five bags of rice valued $7,800 from Ramraj Jerry.
Prosecutor James Garnett said a police officer was in Bourda Market when he got wind of the two men’s actions and acted. Both men were arrested and admitted to the theft.
When Magistrate Annette Singh asked if they agreed with the prosecutor’s facts, both of the men said yes. “I don’t get in problem and it won’t happen again,” Gaynor told the magistrate.
“Well, de stall de open and I steal de five bags,” his accomplice added.
The magistrate asked, “Did it belong to you?” The man did not answer.
Both men were then sentenced to two months in prison.
