Porter on bail after denying $1M fraudulent conversion

A porter is being accused of converting over $1M in valuables entrusted to him to his own use.

Ken Hamlet was yesterday granted $100,000 bail when he appeared in a city court, where he denied the charge of fraudulent conversion.

It is alleged that Hamlet, 47, of Lot 48 La Grange, West Coast Demerara (WCD), was entrusted by Hannetha Rose with a quantity of clothes, cosmetics and footwear, amounting to $1,290,000, in order to deliver them safely to her but converted the items to his own use and benefit.

Prosecutor Michael Grant had no objections to bail but asked Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1 to impose reporting conditions. Grant also requested for bail to be substantial because of the value of the goods.

Bail was granted on the condition that Hamlet report to the ‘F’ Division Headquarters every two weeks commencing from March 11.

The matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for March 12.
