The University of Guyana administration and the two unions which called a strike five weeks ago this morning committed to sign two agreements which should clear the way for classes to resume.
A statement from the unions follows:
The Unions and the Administration met this morning 28th February 2015 and verbally agreed to sign two agreements – a Terms of Resumption agreement and An Interim Salary Increase Agreement. This meeting was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Labour. The meeting produced what we believe to be the final versions of both agreements. The Unions were advised that the contents of both were endorsed by the Ministry of Finance and the University’s Negotiating Team. The agreements were not signed however since the Pro-Chancellor was unavailable. We expect that the agreements will be signed on Monday March 2, 2015 by the Unions, the Vice Chancellor, the Pro Chancellor and a Ministry of Labour official. This will clear the way for us to resume duties and classes to recommence in accordance with the terms of the agreement.
All staff members are invited to a general meeting in the GWLT at 9 am on Monday March 2, 2015. At this meeting we will discuss the terms and implications of the agreements. Please see attached the two agreements for your perusal.
