Despite beginning her campaign as Prime Ministerial candidate for the incumbent PPP/C government, Ambassador Elisabeth Harper will continue serving as Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until the end of this month.
“My resignation will take effect one month after I gave notice, so it will take effect at the end of March because I gave notice in February, in line with my contract,” Harper told Stabroek News yesterday.
Harper continues to execute her duties as Director General and was present at the presentation of credentials by the new United Kingdom High Commissioner to Guyana Greg Quinn on Monday at the Office of the President.
Observers have pointed to the conflict of interest between Harper’s role as Director General and as Prime Ministerial Candidate for the ruling party.
On February 21st, she was named to replace Prime Minister Samuel Hinds as the Prime Ministerial candidate for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic for the May 11th general elections. She confirmed her resignation as Director General to Stabroek News two days after.
