Defending champs West Demerara yesterday went down to the East Bank unit by 20 runs in the Demerara Inter-Association Under-17 competition.
Played at the Police Sports Club ground, West Demerara was dismissed for 138 in 36.3 overs in reply to East Bank’s 158 all out in 47 overs.
West Demerara were 96-3 before losing their remaining wickets for a mere 42 runs.
Stephon Wilson (4-35) and Abdel Bacchus’s (3-28) were the main wicket takers.
Former national under 15 off spinner Sagar Hitharmani picked up two wickets. Keshram Sehoder (35) top scored for West Demerara while Kelvin Shewpersaud (30) and Mark Jeffers (22) supported.
Earlier, East Bank’s innings was assisted by 38 extras from some wayward bowling.
Four of East Bank’s batsmen, Wilson (26), Daniel Scott and Bhojnarine Singh 23 apiece and Jeremiah Scott 22, got starts but failed to carry on.
Seyhoder had a good all-round game, finishing as his team’s best bowler with 3-13 from 10 economical overs. Vickram Talmukund captured three wickets while Shewpersaud and Elian White collected two each.
At the Enterprise ground, hosts East Coast recorded a four-wicket victory over Georgetown in a game reduced to 40-overs-per-innings.
The visitors took first strike and were restricted to 145-7 in their 40 overs. Darshan Persaud top scored with 32 while receiving support from Ronaldo Ali Mohamed 23 and Raymond Perez 17. Baskhar Deodat was the top bowler for the host with 2-25.
In reply East Coast reached their target of 147-6 with just five balls to spare. Seasoned player Ramnarine Chatura impressed with an unbeaten 63 and Gavin Boodnauth 37.
In first round matches on Monday, Georgetown and East Coast claimed victories. Georgetown defeated West Demerara by nine wickets at Eve Leary. Batting first West Demerara was dismissed for 125 in 40.1 overs. Seyhoder scored 33 and Shewpersaud 25. Colin Barlow collected 3-20 and Mark Baptiste 2-15. Georgetown responded with 126-1 in 24.2 overs. Former national under-15 wicket-keeper/batsman Joshua Persaud blasted 59 and Perez 33.
At Enterprise, East Coast got past East Bank by 76 runs. East Coast scored 221-2 off their reduced quota of 40 overs batting first. Chatura led with 71 not out, Boodnauth cracked 62, Bhaskar Yadram 43 and Shrichand Gangaram 26. East Bank were restricted to 145-5 in 40 overs in their response. Paul Thomas got 33 and Mark Ramsammy 32. Bhaskar Deodat and Afzal Rohoman claimed two wickets each.
The competition continues today with leaders East Coast facing West Demerara at Enterprise and Georgetown playing East Bank at Eve Leary.
