A Stabroek Market vendor was last evening shot to his leg and robbed of an undisclosed sum of cash at his Vereeniging, Mahaica home and two of the alleged robbers were caught sometime after in a neighbouring village.
A cousin of the man gave his name as Pappy Singh and said that it appears that the bandits traced the man from the city after he had retired from the day’s work. The woman said it was about four armed robbers who carried out the attack on Pappy and drove off in the direction of the capital.
He was shot in his left leg and his money bag taken away.
Residents were alerted and gave chase as the vehicle drove away. The bandits veered into a trench in another Mahaica village and while two escaped another two were caught.
A police official told Stabroek News that up to press time the two robbers were receiving treatment for minor injuries at the Mahaica Hospital.
Pappy was also undergoing treatment for the wound to his left leg, also at the Mahaica Hospital.
Investigations are continuing.
The Police this morning issued the following statement on the robbery/shooting.
At about 1930h. last night Wednesday March 04, 2015, vendor Randolph Singh, 39 years, of Vereeniging, Mahaica, ECD, was about to enter his residence when he was confronted by four men armed with firearms and who held him at gun point along with his family and a labourer.
During the robbery Randolph Singh was assaulted and shot to his left thigh.
The perpetrators took away $600,000.00 and a quantity of jewellery and escaped in a waiting vehicle. They were pursued by public spirited persons during which the getaway vehicle ran into a canal and two of the men were arrested by citizens. The others managed to escape.
The two suspects were handed over to the police who had also responded to the report and are in custody. The motor vehicle has been detained.
An unlicensed .32 Taurus Revolver with two rounds and two spent shells were recovered by the police.
Randolph Singh was treated at a Private Hospital.
Investigations are in progress.
