A labourer, accused of being part of a group that stabbed a man and then robbed him of his motorcycle, was yesterday refused bail when he was arraigned on a charge of armed robbery.
Ershard Bacchus, 59, of Alberttown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in Georgetown and denied the charge made out against him.
The charge stated that Bacchus on March 6, at Albouystown, being in the company of others and armed with a knife, robbed Antoine Nauth of his Jialing motorcycle, valued $200,000.
On the day in question at about 3 am, Prosecutor Bharat Mangru said, Bacchus and others confronted Nauth in Albouystown and began to stab him about his body, before fleeing the scene with his motorcycle. Bacchus was subsequently pointed out to the police by Nauth, Mangru added.
The prosecutor objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the offence and his fear that if granted bail Bacchus might not return for trial.
Bacchus was later remanded to prison until March 30, when the matter will be called at Court 3.
