A vendor was yesterday remanded to prison on a drug trafficking charge after a court heard that she was caught red-handed by police with cocaine.
The charge states on March 6, at Cross Street, Georgetown, Nancy Augustus, 55, of Lot 40 Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara, had 2 grammes of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Augustus, who sells clothes and food, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to her by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Attorney Adrian Thompson, who appeared on behalf of Augustus, applied for reasonable bail to be granted based on special circumstances. He said Augustus was not at the location where the police found the cocaine. Instead, he said, she was sent by someone to the police to collect some money owed to her but she was accused of the being the owner of the drug.
However, the prosecution’s case differed. Police say Augustus was in a room with the cocaine and when she saw the police entering she threw the illegal substance to the ground.
The ranks then picked up the suspected drug, which was taken to the Brickdam Police station, where it was confirmed to be cocaine.
Magistrate Latchman refused bail and the case was adjourned until March 12.
