A 12-member jury was yesterday empanelled before Justice Franklyn Holder to try Leroy Deonarine, who has been indicted on a charge of rape of a child under 16 years of age.
Deonarine, who is unrepresented by counsel, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on February 4, 2012, he engaged in sexual penetration of a 15-year-old girl.
When asked whether he has a lawyer, the accused answered in the negative and explained that he is representing himself.
The judge allowed the man to collect the depositions and explained to him that the documents are to be used for the preparation of his defence.
Justice Holder told the accused that his matter would be adjourned to this morning at 9, during which time he can retain counsel if he so desires and prepare his defence.
The state’s case is presented by prosecutors Teshana Lake, Orintha Schmidt and Shawnette Austin.
