A youth who is accused of holding a motorcyclist at gunpoint and hijacking his bike while stealing his gold ring was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared in a city court.
Eon Godfrey Lynch, 18, of Diamond, East Bank Demerara denied the charges at his arraignment before the Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, before whom he appeared yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The police’s case is that on February 18, while in the company of others and armed with a gun Lynch robbed Dexter Richards of a motorcycle valued $175,000 which was the property of Shondelle Mars.
On the same day he allegedly robbed Richards of his gold ring valued $50,000.
In addition the police said that on March 1, Lynch escaped from lawful custody pending the investigation of another matter he was arrested for.
Prosecutor Michael Grant said that on the day in question, about 2 pm the complainant rode to Agricola to conduct business, when he encountered mechanical problems with the motorcycle. When Richards stopped and attempted to fix the problem, the defendant who was armed with a gun along with another person who carried a cutlass approached and relieved him of the articles mentioned.
Information given to the police led to the arrest of Lynch who was positively identified by Richards during an identification parade, Grant added.
Objecting to bail, the prosecutor said the defendant previously escaped from custody and has another pending matter before the court. The seriousness of the offence and the fact that a firearm was used in the commission of the crime were additional grounds the prosecutor used in his objection.
Bail was then refused and the matter was adjourned to March 25 and transferred to Court 5.
