An argument over a cell phone number has left a 36-year-old woman hospitalised after she was chopped by her lover.
Aruna Sookram of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD), had to be operated on at the Georgetown Public Hospital after sustaining a deep chop wound to the palm of her left hand, inflicted by her lover.
Hemwantie Sookram, mother of the injured woman said she is very thankful that her daughter is alive.
She related to this newspaper that she was at her Diamond, EBD home at about 2 pm on Tuesday, when she received a phone call.
The person at the other end of the line told her that her daughter’s house had just been doused with gasoline.
The woman said she immediately called the police station before rushing to her daughter’s residence.
“He go fuh chop she to she neck and is raise she raise she hand fuh block it and so come she get a big chop to she… palm. Is kill she he did want do, because when he done, he aim fuh she foot too because I see she get a broad side to she right foot,” the mother said.
Sookram said that from what she understood, her daughter had found out that her lover had obtained the phone number of another woman, with whom he had lately started a relationship. She said Aruna told her that she was just talking to him about his actions when he got angry, picked up a cutlass and began chopping her.
“When he done chop she, he go upstairs and collect about $85,000 to run away but same time the police come and ketch he,” Sookram said.
This newspaper understands that the relationship was a toxic one and it was only last year that the man had doused Aruna’s entire body with gasoline.
The man is currently in police custody.
