An East La Penitence man, who allegedly threw a pot of boiling rice on his sister and afterward beat her with the object, was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared in court charged with wounding.
Denzil Younge was charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Natasha Younge on March 10, so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
Prosecutor Michael Grant told the court the brother and sister had a misunderstanding over food and Denzil threatened her before leaving and later returning to their East La Penitence home, where she was cooking rice. The prosecutor said the man took the pot of boiling rice and threw it on his sister and then proceeded to beat her with the pot.
She was subsequently picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she is in a critical condition with third degree burns.
Grant objected to bail, noting the nature and gravity of the offence and the fact that the woman’s condition is still critical.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry subsequently refused bail and Younge was remanded to prison until March 23, when the next hearing is scheduled.
