Demerara skipper Ronaldo Ali-Mohamed led his team to a 130 runs triumph over Berbice to retain the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Under-17 title yesterday at the Demerara Cricket Club ground.
Ali-Mohamed top scored with 78 to guide his team to 174 all out in 47.5 overs, before returning with the ball to snatch 3-4 to help dismiss Berbice for 44 in 32.1 overs.
The 16-year-old came to the wicket with Demerara 58-5 and shared a 33-run partnership with opening batsman Raymond Perez, who made 30.
He also added 39 runs for the eight wicket with Richie Looknauth (11).
Ali-Mohamed, who won the man-of-the-match award, smashed four sixes and seven fours while former national u-15 skipper Bhaskar Yadram made 22.
Off spinner Asif Ally, who claimed three quick wickets at the top of Demerara’s innings, was Berbice’s best bowler with figures of 4-21 from 10 overs while pacer Sylus Tyndall and left-arm orthodox spinner Joshua Harrichand claimed two wickets each.
Ali-Mohamed next combined with Looknauth to leave Berbice 3-5. They never recovered.
Steve Deonarine (12) was the only batsman to reach double figures.
Sagar Hathiramani and Tameshwar Motiram also took three wickets apiece.
At the Police Sports Club ground, the Guyana U-15 side finished as runners up after winning by 16 runs against Essequibo. The U-15 team scored 218-9 in 50 overs after opting to take first strike while Essequibo replied with 202 all out in 45.1 overs, after a being 94 without loss at one period.
For the U-15 Kevlon Anderson 48 not out and Alphius Bookie 40 were the principal scorers. Four bowlers, Joshua Jones, Monoj Ramraj, Besham Moses and Mahendra Persaud grabbed two wickets each for Essequibo. Openers Mark Williams (59) and Mahendra Persaud (36) led Essequibo’s batting while Sachin Persaud made 25.
Left arm spinner Ashmead Nedd was U-15’s best bowler with 3-19 as Kelvin Umroa and Navendra Persaud supported with two wickets apiece.
At the post match presentation, Drubahadur, President of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) encouraged the players to stay fit and be ready, if selected to tackle United States of America (USA) U-18 team which will tour here later in the month. He congratulated the Berbice team for playing competitive cricket amidst the recent issues surrounding their cricket.
