Charles Austin, who allegedly stole jewellery and other valuables from a woman who was said to be his former partner, was yesterday cleared of a simple larceny charge after he offered compensation.
It was alleged that on March 10, at Georgetown, Austin, 35, stole from the person of Davlyn Daniels a quantity of gold jewellery and other valuables, amounting to $100,000.
Austin, who appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, pleaded not guilty to the charge read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.
Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the court that on the day in question, Austin went up to Daniels and snatched a gold chain she was wearing from her neck along with some other valuables before escaping. He was later apprehended and charged.
But attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat said that the young lady was the spouse of Austin and when he realised they were breaking up he got angry and committed the act. However, Fung-A-Fat added that his client had $100,000 to compensate Daniels.
When asked if she would like to go ahead with the matter, Daniels said no and the charge was subsequently dismissed.
