Seasoned campaigners, Eon Bancroft and Dennis Thomas along with Glenroy Smith emerged victorious during the two-nation tournament this past weekend in Cayenne, French Guiana.
Bancroft fighting in the 69kg division, defeated Axel Cetout on the score cards while Thomas, a 75kgs fighter also won on points against Leonardo Mosquea in the 81kg category.
Smith defeated Anthony Lemarchand via a unanimous decision.
While the trio padded their records, the other six pugilists, Taseka Howard (54kg), Delon Charles, Dwon Thompson (80kg), Quincy Harvey, Trevon King and Dawani Lampkin (65kg) were not as fortunate.
Howard lost via decision to Elaine Abissouana, Thompson was stopped by Simone Dos Santos. National bantamweight champion, Delon Charles showed sublime ability but unfortunately he lost to Kesney Joseph who trained here in January.
Harvey and King (65kg) lost on the score cards to Jordon N’Guete and Talentino de Larosa respectively.
According to manager of the sojourn, Gordon Nedd, Lampkin’s decision loss was astonishing and he protested the result which he described as atrocious. President of the Guyana Boxing Association and deputy Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Steve Ninvalle told Stabroek Sport yesterday that he will “wait on the initial report.
“Nevertheless, I do not expect this in any way to affect the relationship that we have with the French boxing association in any way.”
Ninvalle added “I have had unofficial reports about the level of officiating and the results being nothing less than atrocious but we will still forge ahead on the quest to lift the standard of the sport in the region.”
The GBA head pointed out that the team consisted of mostly inexperienced boxers and “they must understand that when you are in another man’s country you have to win very convincing, so it’s a learning experience.”
He added that a five member team of three boxers and two officials will wing out this weekend for Barbados to participate at the Horace Phillips Memorial Tournament. (Emmerson Campbell)
