A Lethem man was yesterday released on $100,000 bail after he appeared in a city court facing a malicious wounding charge.
Shawn Myers denied that he maliciously wounded Dexter Mentore on January 20, in the Cuyuni River.
When he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before her, Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry set bail at $125,000.
But it was reduced to $100,000 after the defendant begged the court for a reduction since he said that all the cash he had was $50,000.
Prosecutor Michael Grant objected to bail being set at $50,000, stating that the complainant had sustained stabs and fractures about his body. The magistrate then told Myers that she will not make a further reduction.
The matter was transferred to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court for June 1.
