Today the Lusignan Golf Course (LGC) will resume its weekend fixture with the eagerly awaited memorial tournament for the late founder and Editor-in-Chief of Stabroek News David deCaires and veteran golfer Basil Sukhram.
DeCaires served as president of the club and as Club Captain for many years. The tournament is expected to be highly competitive and will feature some of Guyana’s top golfers who are anxious to play following the postponement in February. The tournament will be contested in the Open Medal Play format. According to Club Captain Chen Deo,:“the grounds are now in fair condition, so golfers can look forward to a good competition.”
The club is sponsoring the tournament. Prizes will be awarded for the best gross, nearest to the pin, and first, second and third best net scores.
“The Memorial for legendary golfer Basil Sukhram, who coached locally and coached and played professional golf outside of Guyana, and is father to two of Guyana’s outstanding golfers – Christine and Rishi Sukhram – began in February 2014 as a joint tournament with the David De Caires Memorial,” a statement from the club said. The David deCaires Memorial tournament started in October 2009 in honour of decaires’ adherence to the principles of respectful expression of individual views and freedom of expression on which he based the founding of Guyana Publications Inc., in 1986.
