The National School of Theatre Arts and Drama is staging its third major public production The Performance 3 tonight at the National Cultural Centre.
The production has been billed as one of the school’s major performances which will exhibit the creative work of students in different and new forms of theatre. It will include Great Spirits and Legend of Kako which will incorporate ritualistic theatre in the styles of post-modernism, the avant garde, including myths and storytelling and Guyanese Amerindian myths.
Oedipus Rex and Agamemnon which will incorporate Greek drama from the Classical period done in post-modern avant garde styles and Ramlila which is adapted from the ancient Ramlila (or Ram-leela) performances created by Tulsidas in India and brought to the Caribbean by indentured labourers. This will be done in the form of a Caribbean performance in the style of the traditional folk theatre.
The school has staged several performances since its establishment and has showcased pieces at various events, a press release said. It has performed pieces such as Makatanli, Old Higue, The Sirens, Baccoo, The Stick Fight, The Trouble with Neketa and Pandora’s Box.
Practical and theoretical course run in the first semester introduce students to Acting, Voice, Stage Management, Set, Costuming, Make-up, Lighting, Sound and the History of Drama. They are then put into practice with stage performances.
