A section of the roof of the Stabroek Market stelling collapsed yesterday afternoon.
The deteriorated stelling has been unstable for a number of years and a section of the roof had collapsed last year September, although it hasn’t stopped business.
“I just hear a cracking sound, then I hear a next cracking sound, and then a big crash,” one witness at the scene told Stabroek News yesterday.
He said no one was hurt and ten minutes after members of the city constabulary came and removed the persons who conduct business under the section that caved in. The man said he believes the roof caved in as a result of the constant high tide and the fishermen’s boats hitting the structure frequently.
After the collapse, there was a gaping hole in the roof but some of the zinc sheets remained in their positions. There were also piles of wood on the ground and the roof foundation was slanted.
“We just fed up. We always hearing that this place gon’ fix up but we ain’ seeing nothing. Them at City Hall need to stop all the stupid fighting and fix up this place,” one vendor had said last year.
The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development had indicated that under its $1 billion ‘Clean up my country’ project, sums had been allocated for the municipal markets. It was not stated whether any attention would be given to the Stabroek Market wharf from these funds.
