(Jamaica Gleaner) The Ministry of Agriculture says it expects to harvest some 1.1 million kilograms of onions by the end of May this year under an initiative aimed at increasing onion production in Jamaica.
Director General in the Ministry of Agriculture Don McGlashan says 600,000 kilograms of the expected yield should come from the four agro-parks in St Thomas, St Catherine and Clarendon.
The remainder he says should come from onion farmers in Trelawny and other areas in St Catherine.
McGlashan says onion production in Jamaica is on the increase with over 70 hectares land under cultivation as part of the Ministry’s Onion Development Programme.
