Arthur wins third leg but Eastman is overall winner

Akeem Arthur out pedaled a field of Guyana’s premier cyclists to win the third and final leg of the Cheddi Jagan Memorial road race series yesterday in Essequibo, but Hamza Eastman’s consistency enabled him to lift the overall trophy of this year’s event. By virtue of winning the first leg, placing fifth in the second leg and finishing second yesterday, the Team Coco’s standout was crowned this year’s champion. In yesterday’s 55-mile trek, which pedaled off from Supenaam, proceeded to Charity and ended at Anna Regina, Arthur (2hr:07m:09s) led Eastman and last year’s overall winner, Alanzo Greaves onto the podium. Veteran rider, Robin Persaud and United Bike Shop’s Horrace Burrows were fourth and fifth respectively while Team Alanis’ Paul Choo-Wee-Nam placed sixth. Yesterday’s race commenced as cool as the weather in the Cinderella County and there was not much theatrics on the upward journey. When the wheelsmen turned back at Charity, the peloton was still mostly together save for a few stragglers and Orville Hinds who unfortunately suffered an early puncture. There were several mini breaks on the way back to Anna Regina but the attackers were quickly wheeled in by the peloton. The cyclists pretty much stuck to the script until Arthur solo attacked in the final 300m and held on for his first win of the season. His attack went unchallenged as Eastman, the virtual leader heading into yesterday’s leg was content on preserving his one point lead ahead of Greaves. Eastman’s tactic did not prove costly as he was able to edge out Greaves on the line in the bunch sprint. Marica Dick (female), Julio Melville (Mountain Bike), Andrew Hicks (Junior) and Ralph Williams (veteran) were also categorical winners yesterday. Notes: The sum of 38 riders started in yesterday’s race. The Memorial event is in it’s 18th year. It is held to commemorate the life and works of former president, Cheddi Jagan. Jagan would have celebrated his 92nd birth anniversary yesterday. The initial leg was staged on the roadways of West Demerara while the second leg was held in Berbice. Yesterday’s event was sponsored by S.Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Constructing Services for the eighth consecutive year. (Emmerson Campbell)
